Chaminade Center for Excellence – Summer Robotics Camp
Every year, we teach hundreds of K-8 students robotics at our school’s annual STEM Summer Camp. Our thorough and engaging program allows us to cover many important fields of robotics in a short amount of time, giving kids an in-depth experience where they learn how to design, build, and program robots. Inspired by our mentorship, many of these kids have made their way onto Team 1138, playing a key role in the engineering process and rising into leadership.
Robotics for the Spectrum
Our team implemented one of the nation’s first robotics programs specifically designed for children with ASD. We hosted 4-week long sessions where participants built VEX IQ Clawbots- a feat made possible by tailoring the curriculum to their specific needs. The program culminated with a driving challenge, with participants receiving awards at the end, with employees of the Ed Asner Family Center stating that it was one of their most successful programs to date.
SASA
In late June of 2023 we participated in the National Advocacy Conference (NAC) held by the Student Association for STEM Advocacy (SASA) in Washington D.C. The advocacy focused on two pieces of legislature – Title IV of the Every Student Succeeds Act, and Title III of the CHIPS & Science Act. We met with the offices of both California Senators, Padilla & Feinstein, as well as three of our congress people- Garcia, Brownley, and Sherman.
CASA
After connecting with several California Robotics Teams at NAC 2022, we co-founded the California Association for STEM Advocacy, or CASA. In January, we held a STEM Advocacy conference, where we spent two days teaching fellow robotics teams how to advocate, having them hold meetings with their state senators. As a result of this conference, we passed a resolution for March 25th, 2023, to become STEAM Observance day.
